Bishop-Prelate Álvaro del Portillo:


Faithful collaborator of St Josemaría. He was the first successor as head of Opus Dei. An exemplary Priest, he served the Church at all moments. He collaborated in the work of the Second Vatican Council. He received his ordination as Bishop in 1991, from the hands of John Paul II.

Msgr. Álvaro del Portillo was born in Madrid (Spain) on March 11th, 1914. He was the third among 8 siblings, in a family with deeply Christian roots. He was a Civil Engineer, and had a PhD in Philosophy and in Canon Law. ‘Dies Natalis’: March 23rd, 1994 (after a trip to the Holy Land).

He was one of the first three Priests of Opus Dei. His process of beatification and canonization has been opened.
